Being able to sell cards back is half of what a local Magic shop is for. Ask what they pay on staples in the format you play.

Events actually running, not just posted

A schedule on the wall means nothing if nobody comes. Ask how many players turned up last week.

Format literacy

Whether they know the local Commander scene, whether Standard fires, whether there is a Modern night. A shop that cannot tell you what its own players play is not running a community.

Play space that is usable

Enough tables, decent lighting, and somewhere to put a drink. Small things; they decide whether people stay.
