What to look for in a vintage shop

Storage that shows respect for the material

Sleeves, holders, upright storage, away from direct light. Vintage sitting loose in a tray tells you everything about how it has been handled and how it was bought.

Condition described before you ask

A shop that points out the crease, the soft corner, or the off-centre cut is a shop that expects to sell to you again.

A view on alteration

Trimming and recolouring are real problems in vintage. Ask how they check. A shop with no answer has not thought about it.

Graded vintage where the stakes are high

For expensive vintage, a slab from a recognised company removes both the condition argument and much of the authenticity risk. Ask why anything expensive is still raw.

Willingness to talk you out of something

The best vintage dealers will tell you a card is not worth what you are about to pay. It is the strongest signal in this category.

Watch out for

Altered cards. Trimming and recolouring are the main authenticity risks in vintage, and they are hard to see in a sleeve under shop lighting.
Vintage sealed product from an unverifiable source. Resealing is a known problem and the premium is large enough to attract it.
