What to look for in a grading shop

An itemised receipt, every time

Card, set, declared value, service level, and date. Without it you have no record of what you handed over.

A clear answer on insurance in transit

Who insures the cards on the way there and back, and to what value. This is the question most likely to reveal a shop that has not thought it through.

Honesty about turnaround

Grading turnaround times fluctuate and no shop controls them. A shop that quotes a firm date is either guessing or repeating a marketing figure.

A view on whether your card is worth grading

A good shop will tell you when the fee exceeds the likely upside. One that submits everything you bring is selling submissions, not advice.

Which companies, and why

Different grading companies command different premiums for different material. A shop should be able to explain its recommendation.

Ask before you buy

Who insures my cards in transit, and for how much?
What service level are you submitting at, and what does that cost me in total?
Do you think this card is worth grading at all?
What happens if a card comes back damaged or lost?
Can I have an itemised receipt for what I am leaving with you?

Watch out for

Leaving cards with no itemised receipt. This is the single most common way people lose valuable cards to a well-meaning shop.
Firm turnaround promises. Turnaround is the grading company's to set and it moves.
