Modern Scarlet & Violet product prices differently depending on whether the set is still in print, whether the chase is a Special Illustration Rare, and whether you are buying English or Japanese. Local shops that turn sealed every week usually sit near retail on in-print boxes and use recent sold comps for SIRs.
How collectors price this locally
Decision rules for shopping at a local card shop — not live quotes. Confirm recent sold comps before you buy or sell.
- In-print booster boxes should not look like investment assets at a healthy shop. Heavy premiums on current SV sets usually mean the shop is selling scarcity theatre, not market.
- Special Illustration Rares move on sold comps for the exact card and language. Asking prices on marketplace listings are not comps.
- Japanese SV product is a separate market. Shops that price JP and EN the same often do not specialise in either.
- ETBs and collection boxes are convenience products. Compare them to the loose packs and promos you actually want before paying a sealed premium.
- Ask whether the shop buys sealed as well as sells it. Two-way sealed shops usually keep tighter pricing because they see both sides of the market every week.
