Pokémon card shops

Pokémon is unusual in carrying three quite different customers at once: players who need singles for a deck, collectors chasing specific art and sets, and parents buying packs for a nine-year-old. A shop that handles all three well has a singles binder or case, sealed product at sensible prices, and somewhere for kids to actually play. CardShopMap currently lists 1153 Pokémon shops across 50 states and 843 cities.

What to look for in a Pokémon shop

Written by us, not supplied by anyone. No shop pays to appear in this section.

A singles case or binder, not just sealed

Sealed-only shops are retail. Singles are where a shop demonstrates it understands the market and where players and set collectors are served.

Sealed priced near retail on in-print product

Current sets should be at or near normal retail. Heavy markups on in-print product usually mean the shop is pricing scarcity that is not there.

League or organised play on the calendar

A shop running league is a shop with a community, which is the thing that actually makes a local shop worth having. Check our events listings.

Somebody who can explain formats to a newcomer

Ask which format the local league plays and whether a starter deck is enough to join. The quality of that answer tells you a lot.

Vintage Pokémon handled carefully

Early sets in sleeves and holders, and honesty about condition. Older Pokémon has a serious counterfeit problem, so a shop should be willing to talk about how it authenticates.

Questions to bring to the shop

CardShopMap doesn’t answer these — the shop does. Ask before you buy or sell.

  • Do you have singles, and are they sorted by set?
  • When is league, and can a beginner turn up with a preconstructed deck?
  • What is your per-person limit on release day?
  • How do you check older cards for authenticity?

Watch out for

  • Counterfeits are a real and persistent problem in vintage Pokémon and in sealed vintage especially. Sealed old product from an unverifiable source should be treated with suspicion.
  • Steep markups on in-print sealed product during a hype cycle. In-print means more is coming.

Shops tagged Pokémon

Tags come from the shop's own site or an owner claim, never from a competitor's classification.
