A shop can usually estimate a grading timeline, but it cannot control every part of it. Your card may wait for the shop’s next batch, travel to the grading company, sit in a service-level queue, return by insured shipment, and then wait for local pickup processing. Search grading shops near you and ask each store how often it submits, whether your cards leave immediately, and whether the quoted timing starts at drop-off or at grader check-in.
Get realistic language in writing. “Estimated turnaround” is normal; a guaranteed date for a third-party grader is a red flag unless the shop is promising only its own handling step. Ask how status updates are delivered and what happens if a card needs an upcharge, authentication review, or declared-value adjustment. The card grading explained guide covers the moving pieces. Do not submit cards you need back for a near-term show, sale, or gift unless the timeline still works if it runs long.
